The cots usually have a side that is able to be raised, so you can easily reach your infant during the night for feeding and comforting. Look for a crib with an air-conditioned mattress, as well as a protective cover that will shield your baby from staining. It is also advisable to pick up some baby-safe add-ons such as a blanket and a soft toy.
If you're looking for a more long-term alternative, some cribs are equipped with conversion kits that let you turn them into a cot or a toddler bed when the time comes. This is great for extending their life and making the transition more seamless. Some have a removable section at the top that can be turned into an infant bed. Others can be used with an adult bed that is standard or a high-rise bed. This is a good choice for families that are planning on frequent travel or switching rooms at night. The Iora is a bassinet designed for infants designed to help parents feel closer to their infant while they sleep. It can be adjusted up and down and slides through three positions to fit beside the parent's bed, or in the corner of the room so that baby is always close to the parent's side. This is a great option for parents who want to sleep in a co-sleeping bed but don't want to share their bed. Or if one of the parents has mobility issues such as back pain or arthritis. Our mums who tested it loved the ease with which they could access their baby while in the Iora and that it came with an adjustable reflux incline that helped to reduce gas.
Our mums also love the fact that it complies with NICE guidelines that state to put the baby in the crib or Moses basket on its own (with no toys, blankets pillows, etc.). They also say that the mattress is firm and comfortable for the baby and easy to find sheets for. It isn't as light as other smaller bedside cribs however, so if you want something lighter and more portable, consider one of the alternatives on our list.
